Great Horned w/ REPOST
by Guy Runco
Going through some older shots, I came across this owl from a couple of years ago. Shot in the shade, I tried to make the best of the lightless situation, not sure if it works. Comments / suggestions greatly appreciated.

11 commentsI do like the image as presented, but probably lean toward brightening the owl as others have suggested. I'd probably play with a few techniques on how to go about doing that, including fill or parametric curves in ACR and selective dodging, but I'm sure you have your favourite approach and that's probably the place to start!
In any event, this is a great shot and I envy it for several reasons, not the least of which is your angle (camera to owl ratio)! I haven't been as fortunate in my owl shots!
Nicely done...
I like the pose of the owl and the direct stare you seem to be getting from it. The background works nicely here. I agree with others about brightening this up a little and I might add a little more selective sharpening to bring out more detail. I also find myself wishing there was a bit more room at the bottom of the frame for the part of the tail we can't see for balance.
Mia - I would much rather have the tail feathers in the photo, but the branch is nearly completely obscuring them as well as adding a mess to the bottom of the shot, so I chose to keep the crop. Thanks for the suggestion!
