Bass Harbor Light

An image captured this past weekend in Acadia National Park. On Friday morning, I made a last-minute decision to make the 5-hour drive up to Bar Harbor.

This weekend was the first weekend that the Loop Road was opened since it's usual winter closure....and I was hoping to find some untouched, precious places.

While the skies didn't cooperate (until today, when I got back to Boston), at least this image can hopefully stand on it's own. I'm very interested in comments and critiques about any aspect of this image.

For the record: There is a US Government property sign that has been removed (digitally) in this image (upper right corner). I suppose that the particular employee that placed that sign wasn't a photographer at heart!

Otherwise...I'd hoped to find a small twist on the otherwise traditional image of this sentinel. It's similar in style to my image of Portland Head light posted here on NPN...with the reflection of the beacon in a small tidepool.

Is this a distracting element to you...or does it work or add to the otherwise upper-right-heavy traditional composition?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas!!

Robert

Oh....and before anyone asks.... ...this is a single exposure and isn't suffering from any chr abb. The significant glow/edge highlighting around the edges of all the evergreen treetops is backlighting from the setting sun (it's in the RAW). Just wanted to clarify...as it's something that I would've noticed and commented on...

When I first opened this image, the intensity of those highlights really surprised me!

I have been to this light several times, and while this is a classic view, there are many differences that make it stand apart. The pink streaks of light in the sky for instance as well as the reflection in the tidal pool. I like it for what ever that is worth.

I inviting you to visit Oz if you like lighthouses Robert :) You might find something really interesting here with that subject!
I like it. Simple yet effective composition! I'm viewing the larger photo on my calibrated screen so if your colour was set to sRGB then my impression might be incorrect. It is a tod too dark for me. This gives a nice feeling to it but takes away some details from the rocks below (bottom LHS). I would make them a tod brighter and make sure their details, contrast is visible. This would also make those threes (at the top right) just a tod brighter.
The reflection is not districting at all in my eyes. I believe it adds to the scene but it would be great to read what others may think about it. Very nice capture Robert! Did The pink lines leading my eyes to the lighthouse are very attracting :)

I think this is very good. Really like the colors in the sky and and IMHO the reflection of the light in the tidal pool adds to, not detract from, the image. I have made a number of trips to this light and have never been so fortunate as to have light like this. Very nice job.

A twist on a icon that's been shot a million and one times. This is the first shot I've seen wtih the reflection in the pool. Nice find. I also like the pink streaks that seem to originate behind the lighthouse. I bet it was nice to be there without a hundred people climbing around on the rocks.

Robert,

I like the slight difference in the color of the rocks. The composition and detail are spot on. And as far as the beacon reflecting in the small tide pool goes, its like the cherry on top of a sundae! Excellent Work!

Wonderfrul lighthouse scene, Robert. The light is very nice here. Great sky and the reflection is a nice touch. I can see this without the reflection too, which I might actually like even better, but I'm not even sure about that..so, as it is looks great!

Congrats on the WP!
Beautiful - from the reflections, to the subtle colour variations in the rocks, to the sky.

A different view on a classic location. The sky is wonderful and I love the perspective taken at low tide with more rocks exposed. The lighting works on the one hand in that I love this image as is. On the other hand, it seems a shame to be able to see the detail of the barnacles and weed below the high water mark. But that would be a different image I guess. As to the reflection, no strong feelings one way or the other. It's another interesting/different aspect but doesn't make or break the image IMO.

Overall I'd say nicely done.
