The Rock Trail

My first star trails on medium format film! I'm happy with the result. And it was quite a night too! Weather forecasts promised clear skies but as it often happens, it was partly cloudy instead. The clouds were moving swiftly by the strong winds. Despite these conditions, I decided to stay and see what the night was going to offer. I made two attempts before this one. Both of them about 1-hour exposures and in both cases clouds attacked the sky sweeping the already exposed star trails away. But the third attempt was perfect. Winds calmed down and there was a single cloud floating behind the rock mushroom slowly moving away to the right thus creating the motion blur effect. The rest of the sky remained clear during the whole exposure.

This is a 1-hour exposure on Provia 100F film. Shot with Mamiya RB67 PRO SD camera and Sekor C 50mm lens. Rocks and cloud streaks are moonlit. Image is as close to the slide as possible.

What an excellent range you picked up in that one sheet of film Boris.

Really well done Boris. Night photography is hard using film and you did great. I like your placement of both the rock and north star. On a technical note, what phase was the moon in and what aperture did you use for the exposure?

Thank you guys! Youssef, aperture was f/5.6 and moon was 65% illuminated.

Pretty wild the way that cloud made the rock look as if it were flying through space or something. The colors are pleasing and the comp is nice too.

Great rock formation and star trail. The clouds add a feeling of motion. :toast:

Nice. I like the almost cartoon sense that the rock is speeding across the starfield. I like this light and comp.

Very nice shot. Star trails are the one thing that I still use film for. A couple nit-picks. I might like to see a longer exposure...maybe 2-3 hours. You'd probably need about a 20-30% moon to do this without blowing out the shot. With less moonlight, you'll also get more star trails visible. Also, if you were able to time it so the moon was lower in the sky (which it will be with 20% illumination anyway) and illuminating more of the front of the rock, you could avoid some of the harsher shadows on the rock.

Thank you all! Grant, thanks for the suggestion. Will try it when conditions are right. For this shot the moon was high to the West and it set behind the high plateau walls almost right after I stopped the exposure. A rising moon from East will provide the lower position and it will illuminate the rock in a very different way.

This is really cool to look at Boris. Sounds like you worked to get it, and it paid off. The star trails are amazing and I also like the looks of the clouds on the right. Very nice!
