Surprised Groundhog

Just a snapshot with my little old Canon SD450, which I happened to take on a walk in the woods with my dog, just a few days ago. We glimpsed something crossing the trail ahead of us, and it then scampered up a tree as we approached. It stayed absolutely motionless for several minutes, after which I finally dragged my Westie away. He has yet to forgive me.

On reading up, I find that groundhogs are good tree climbers, but they will always head for safety in a burrow unless they have strayed too far.
