Nikon D-300, Nikon 300mm 2.8 vr. This capture was made at the san jacinto wildlife area, late january 2011. The capture was made from the driver side of my suv, while looking for my next capture. Please tell me what you think of this image, Thanks Eric Stogner.

I like this shot a lot Eric. The angle is great being at ground level with the bird. The background colors also set the bird off nicely. The background does look a little noisey. You might try doing a little selective noise reduction. Otherwise very nice.

Welcome to NPN Avian.

This is a solid start: good position relative to the camera and in the frame. It is quite over-sharpened as posted: the edges throughout appear "scratchy," there's a bit of a sharpening halo around the bird and especially around the bill, and there's more noise showing in the background than there should be.

Your D300 and 300/2.8 should produce excellent sharpness as long as the focus is good and the shooting parameters were within reason. It would help if you included the EXIF info with your post (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) plus how much you might have cropped the image, and whether you shot in raw or in jpeg.

A final suggestion: there's no need to compress the file so much when you post. You are permitted 300kb for the small image - this is only 135kb..

Hi Eric,
Welcome to NPN. Nice shot of this killdeer, I agree with Richard that it looks oversharpened. If you back off the sharpening and just run it on the bird that will also reduce the background noise. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your shots. :toast:

Welcome to NPN Eric, you might want to provide the data on the image i.e. fstop, shutter speed, etc. It helps the comentors with their critque. Also include a larger image if possible. Glad to see you onboard.

Hey Eric,
Glad you finally made the jump to NPN. You must have tired of Harry and I talking about it. Was this the day that you and Harry and I met? Anyway, glad to have you posting. I agree with the others that this is over sharpened quite a bit. I'm really noticing the ground sparkling a little too much, there is a halo around the bird, and it appears that you sharpened the entire image instead of selecting just the bird. I like the comp a lot on this and you have a real good head angle with catch light in the eye. Remeber to post a larger version when ever you post. It really helps to disect an image and provide great tips/help. Also, as has been mentioned, it would really help if we knew the EXIF data as Richard mentioned. Good first post my friend. Can't wait to see your next image. By the way, nice to see you last weekend at the pier. Maybe it will be better this weekend but I hear the winds are supposed to pick up. See you soon Eric! :toast:
