This was my gear (minus my new MIII) before it toppled over last week. I really need a "real" tripod. Ft. DeSoto one of my favorite spots to shoot. This last accident is costing me some big bucks. It's time to get insurance.

Thanks for posting here, I don't visit avian much though I do love birds, but lenses that cost more than the camera frankly scare me.So I take bird images when I can get close enough for a straight 300mm shot. Being without your camera I'm sure is like losing an arm or a leg. But it's just as bad to have it and be stuck at home due to weather or lack of funds. I'll have to spend some time perusing your gallery did look at the post where you told your sad story about your gear, but it was a beautiful image, despite the accident. As I said nice meeting you and Buen suerte with your gear in the future.

Just a thought on how you deploy your tripod, Cheryl. Your setup there has a lot of weight up top, meaning a high center of gravity but your tripod legs are only deployed to their narrowest position which when you have it low to the ground makes for an accident waiting to happen. Most tripods allow you to angle the legs out further which would require that you extend the legs more, but you would have a much more stable setup. If your current tripod doesn't offer this feature, toss it and get one that does. So sorry to hear about the "accident", I think its something we all are afraid we will encounter at one time or another.

Hi Cheryl. Sorry to hear about the tumble, but they do happen in nature photography sometimes. Love those flowered shoes/boots!! Are those your "shooting boots"?

Sorry about your gear, Cheryl. Although I used an aluminum Manfrotto (about 5 pounds) for a few years, I now use a carbon tripod and a Wimberley I, which add up to about 8 pounds. One thing I like about the Wimberley head is that the gimbal design allows the camera to stay perfectly centered directly above the tripod, which offers the least amount of imbalance. Center of gravity is very important, so the more weigh you have under the camera (and heavy glass) the better.

He Bill. Thanks for the visit. I want one of those set ups so badly and at the cost of this repair i could have been halfway there or so. That's my next purchase goal. :wavey:

Excellent shot of this bird in its natural environment Cheryl
Despite the hard light, it's a great image of this rare wingless species of Flower-Footed/Aquafina Black-Backed bird

Generally speaking:
You know your photo forum has mostly guys when ...
The member photo contains the attractive content that it does and you have to go back more than a year to find one with more views than this one - and that photo is also from Cheryl!

Nice to see you Cheryl. Sorry to hear about your gear. Just to add to what Peter said above, if you're still using that tripod, you can push the grey levers/buttons at the top of the legs to make them angle out further. Apologies if you already knew that. That looks like the Manfrotto 055 that I use and it shouldn't have a problem supporting the camera and lens shown here.

Cheers and good shooting,
Brad
