Lesser Tamandua

One of the most beautiful animals we encountered in the Pantanal, Brasil last November. We were walking in a forest, so aggressively attacked by mosquitos that we decide to go back. Just on the way back we heard a loud cracking noise in a tree. When I looked up we saw these two Lesser Tamanduas breaking open a Termite nest. The youngster climbed on mother's back when we came too close. Looks like a heavy backpack!

One of my favorite critters, and a difficult one to photograph given the environment. Nice to see some of the detail in the larger version. How great to find one with a youngster!

Nice image. Considering the conditions you have done a good job getting this photo. Don/t know if cropping this to a vertical comp. would be any better, but might be something to look at. Thanks for sharing.

What a cool creatures Ellen. I like it that you included that termite nest. I can imagine this was not an easy image to pull off shooting up against the bright sky filtering through those green leaves; it was hardly possible not to wash out that sky, at least not without applying flash. The other small nit I have is the horizontal branch touching the (rather long) nose of the Tamandua. Thanks for sharing these critters.

Amazing creatures and I think you really captured them well considering the situation. Thanks for sharing!
