Hug Point, Oregon

This was taken a few weekends ago at Hug Point on the Northern Oregon Coast. This is a single exposure with my 5dii @17mm with a .8 second shutter speed. I would love to know what people think of the colors in this. I processed the raw file to accentuate the magentas and try to take an otherwise empty sky and make it more interesting. Hopefully I didn't overdo it and make the image look too processed.

Thanks,
Scott

The colors work just fine for me, though I'm also mildly curious about a B&W version. Otherwise I think it looks quite good in terms of composition and all the other elements. What a wonderful spot! I've seen only a couple of other shots from this location posted previously on NPN.

the wave motion just sucks you into this image. The light makes you want to stay. I like the touch of color in the sky and don't think you've overdone any thing. this is one spectacular image.

Scott- The wave action looks fantastic and the colors in the rock and surf very natural. I might expect this type of sky color earlier or late in the day compared to the warmer light that seems to be hitting the rock. Have you tried warming the sky a little? The contrast of cool sky warm land may be the way to go to separate the subjects. This is where the art of photogrpahy really comes in as well. Very cool shot. :toast:

Thank for the comments.

Phil: I hadn't thought of this one as a B&W. I did a quick go at it after reading your comment and didn't love it. Thanks for the suggestion though, it isn't something I had considered at all, it is always good to have new ideas.

Harry: That is exactly what I was a bit worried about. I processed the sky to make it appear as though it was later in the day then it was when I took the picture. The tide was going out, so by the time the sky would have looked like this, there was no wave action to capture. I personally like it as is with the cool sky / warm foreground, I just wanted to make sure others didn't think it was too much. Thanks again!

Very nice balance of light and wonderful textures. That waterfall in the middle looks pretty interesting too.

The light on the rocks, the motion of the surf, the waterfall, all are beautiful elements in an outstanding composition. I like the colors as presented. Beautiful work.

This a cool composition. The light is balanced, nice wave action, the warming filter in the sky may be worth a try

This is beautiful, Scott. I like your composition with the foreground tide leading my eye up to the falls and throughout the rest of the scene. Your processing looks good here--it looks very natural and at the same time it conveys the beauty of the scene well.

Very nice image Scott. I really like the composition from out in the waves. I would like to see a version with a slightly warmer sky for comparison. The sky as presented doesn't look too over the top or anything, but I think a warmer sky may compliment the foreground/mid ground better.

Thanks for the comments everyone, since a number of people have requested it, here is a version with a warmer sky. I am travelling for work, so we will see how my laptop's color calibration is, and how well the Portland airport's wireless can handle file uploads. I tend to prefer the warmer sky version that was suggested. So thanks for the idea!

Let me know what you think.

I like the water lines. It is perfectly done. But when it comes to the sky. Man I hate it and you know that. However, I think you have managed to balance it.

Overall, I think the location is phenomenal, the technique of catching the waves action is fantastic and the rest, is out of your control.

Peace mate,

Haha, yes, I was aware of your opinion Abdullah. :) Thanks for commenting anyway. Come back to Portland and we will go again and hope for more interesting skies!
