Loggerhead Shrike

by May Haga

Gallery: AvianPosted May 15, 2011146 views28 comments
This year we have been seeing a lot of Loggerhead Shrikes which bodes well for the species. They are considered endangered in Saskatchewan. This one was on the roadside waiting for me to take its picture.

Nikon D300s, 300 + 2 times teleconverter, 1/640, f 5.6, ISO 200, out the car window. Please check the large image.

Thanks for looking and critiques appreciated.

Well composed with the bird's position, great technicals and nice complimentary background. The detail in the larger version is incredible. Nicely done.

Excellent image, May. Love the detail, pose and smooth bg. I've yet to see one of these guys (or if I did I thought it was a Northern Shrike). :toast:

Nice work, May. Love that simple lit from the bottom background. It really sets the stage for the bird. Great techs, too.

A nicely colored BG that compliments the colors of the bird quite well. Detail looks real good in the large version. I assume this was taken on a hill but I still keep trying to straighten this one out.

Beautiful shot & what a BG. Feathers rising & head turn makes it perfect.

Nice bird and composition. I'd like to see more detail in the plumage and better sharpness on the wood post. There's a darker area just beside the back/wing that probably is a processing flaw.

Nice background colors May and I like the wind-made crest and the leaning post. Composition works well too.

Nice handling of the blacks and whites. The eye can be very difficult to see against the mask. I enjoy them here and am happy to hear that they are increasing in numbers in your area.

Nice, May. A very nice pose and I like the angled fence post. The graduated bg works well with the bird.

I really like this species, thrilling to see. Nice composition and I like the weathered perch and background. I can see what Richard is referring to re detail in the breast and post, perhaps opening up the aperture a stop or two would increase the sharpness with this teleconverter. An excellent photo regardless! :toast:

Very nice catch May...I have seen them more lately by me aswell this year, but I can't get within 50 yards of these guys and want a good shot of a Loggerhead SOOO badly. Nice head turn and pose. Techs look great also!

May-good job on the exposure, nice detail, and I love the background. I was thrilled to see this guy's cousin, the Northern Shrike, this past winter in Vermont-very cool birds!
