Gulp! + second image

So on my day of watching bubble feeding whales I got close to two different lunges from the whales. The first was the side view of the main whale I posted in my previous photo. That image shows the play of the whales with the birds and the trees in the background and provides a good sense of the overall scene.

This image was from a more head on view of the big boy in the the middle of the pod and provides a more intimate perspective. Because of the awesome view of the gaping mouth, I zoomed my 100-400 all the way to 400mm and quickly snapped off 10 or 11 images in the 4 seconds the whales were out of the water. Due to the rocking boat a few of the images were poorly composed, and the first image had a ton of motion blur as I was panning the lens in to position and zooming. But right at the peak of the whales lunge I got 3 nice shots in a row. This is the first of those three. The remaining two have the mouth closing but the spray of water coming off of the whales. I think it is my favorite just because of the gaping mouth, but I can't really decide between it and #3.

For a great description of what whales do while bubble feeding, take a look at Brad Hill's recent post.

I would love to hear what you guys think of this compared to my last post. Personally I prefer this sort of shot to the wider angle shot I posted previously, but a number of people have pointed at my last post as the stronger of the two.

Thanks again!

This really hows the size and magnitude of these great beasts - I like the mountains in the background and the focus on the biggest whale

Scott: Was just cruising through the all photos gallery and came across this and then had to look at your other one as well. Both are spectacular. I don't have a strong preference since I like the greater environmental elements in the first and the focus on the action with this one. Marvelous experience superbly captured.>=))>

Sweet!! I much prefer this shot. The composition really works well with the huge whale that is the focus of the image, the mountain background and the lone bird. Fantastic capture.

Stunning, how often to you get to see the details inside of a whale's mouth. The mountains in the background, the lone bird and dark clouds add to the atmosphere of the scene. I happen to like this one just slight better but both are amazing pictures. Way to go, very cool experience.

Thanks for all the comments everyone, since most people seem to prefer the closer view this scene provides, here is another image taken about half a second later. I had to clone out the bird in this one as it ended up in a distracting spot in the frame. I think I prefer the one I posted at the top of the thread, but the landscape photographer in me likes the balance the whale has with the mountain in this one, plus, I love the water spray.

Terrific action and great details! I like the way, Whale is towering the mountain !
I find this very-very impressive but at the same time wish that, it had a better cut on the left hand side. But you could do nothing about it.

Great image. The clarity and detail are great. I really like the comp and the bird adds to the image. It portrays the action of bubble feeding very well. Over all a great image.

Hey Scott,

Very cool shot - love seeing the inside of the mouths and great drama here. I think I slightly prefer the last post, simply because of the impact the birds added to the image (to me it helped convey the feeling of the "melee"). Of the two images in the post, the biologist in me points me in the direction of the closer view (2nd post), but both are dramatic.

Cheers...hope more are coming in this series!

Thanks again for all the comments guys. I think this might be the end of the bubble feeding series, The other images are similar enough to the ones I have posted that they would end up being a bit repetitive. I might reprocess some of the diving tail fluke shots and post those though. You have to love a day where you are on a boat for 3 hours and come away with 10 to 15 shots you love.

This is fairly incredible as an image. Obviously, the behavior is almost beyond belief, but as someone who has been blessed to witness it on multiple occasions, I don't think a portrait style image could turn out any better. I love the view of the baleen.
