High Water

I made this picture a few days ago in the river bottoms of the Wisconsin River near my home. The water was pretty high and I was getting a different look at things. This was made not long after sunrise with very heavy fog changing the look of this area. Thanks for looking.

Nice mystic feel here Nick. I can feel the quiet.

The recession to "nothingness" works really well here.

eerie. I like the monochromatic look and the silhouettes fading into the fog. This is really a gripping image. Very nicely done.

I like how the warm morning light paints the mist with its color Nick. Always a magical time.

A nice graphic image - but I'd do a straight B&W instead of this sepia look

Thanks for your comments on this one so far. There was kind of an eerrie feeling here, but as the early light started to brighten the fog I had a little bit of a calmer feel  .
Luke, This is the color version, but I did consider a b/w conversion also. After looking at both I just prefered the original version a little more. Here is the b/w. Thanks much, Nick

Nick, I appreciate the color version, as it offers us a feeling of warming sun rays despite high water and fog! Your image reflects this specific atmosphere well. Thanks for sharing.

I much prefer the original post - much more moody IMO. Very nice Nick - I half expect to see the Creature of the Black Lagoon swimming by.

Thanks Peter and Bill. For awhile on this morning I was starting to feel like I wanted to get out of there  . As the sun started to brighten things and I could see a little ways into the fog I was getting a better feeling about this place. Finding any kind of a comp I liked seemed pretty hard. I only made about five images and liked this one the best. I thought if nothing else it did capture the feel of this place on that morning. I much prefer the color version too. I'm sure the b/w could use some work making it better also. Thanks guys, I appreciate your comments. Nick

I love the ghostly shapes, but im not totally sold on the color (and the b&w seems too dull). that hue kind of makes me think of smog--which is not a good thing. I might play with a cooler WB and see what happens...

Very eerie image, Nick. The hint of trees in the background adds a lot of mystery. I like the sepia tones you added to this image. Good to know you are making use of all the rains we had. :toast:

The B&W works better, but I would add more contrast, and go more for a Vivid approach to add a dark deep mood to the image IMO. I like it!

I appreciate all of your comments with your thoughts and suggestions. Here is one last version I thought I would try. The first version had a small crop but I forgot that on this one. I also did another b/w along the lines of what James was thinking. I think it did improve it but don't want to get to many re-dos so probably won't post that version. Thanks for the help! Nick

This has a very cinematic feel to it, Nick. I know I've said it before, but I'm always amazed with what you come up with from your neck of the woods. You're really tuned in. (I like the original image best.)

I like them all, but in the end, the first one hits me the strongest. Nice sort of mystery to it.

I really like the mood of the image, but it does not evoke the feeling of a peaceful sunrise for me. It feels more like an oppressive wildfire smog, maybe that's cus I lived in LA during some big wildfires, lol. But, that mood works, and it's a powerful image.

A slight preference for the BW for me. It's hard to tell whether the original is colour or sepia (the former I presume). Either way a really fine piece of work.

Thanks much Kah Kit. It is hard to tell but the original is color. I'm going to work on the b/w version some yet and might have something nice with that when I finish. Cheers! Nick. Appreciate your thoughts!

It is a personal processing preference with this type of image. I like the contrast of the 3rd post, the main tree "stands out". Neat scene either way you go
