Twisted Beauty

This tree was located at the type of a canyon wall in the Columbia River Gorge. After a steep climb, I was able to photograph it with my 70-200mm lens.

Thanks in advance for any C&C's!

I wish there was a larger print included. It would help me evaluate the image better. The colors and contrast seem good, but there are some things I would like to see in the larger image.

Cool find, I like the twisty mossy trees with the lighter lichens. I do prefer a slight crop off the lower left corner and top (removing the blue sky).

Beautiful structure and color in these twisted trees. Must've been quite an adventure getting there.

Very neat Shot Justin. Lots of great elements, and a darn hard image to compose. I agree with Floris about the blue sky, but I like it cropped as is. I think if I had to choose, I would choose to crop. I love the variety of colors and the obvious detail. Compression has to be hurting this, but it still looks great.

I'd love to see a b&w of this. The colors are rich and full but there is so much going on with the incredible structure and feast of textures that I can't help but think that color is not neccesary. Please don't get me wrong, I love it as it is. Just thinking it would be a great b&w piece also.

Beautiful, Justin. Maybe this is a total no-no in landscape, but you could maybe just clone out the very small bits of blue sky.

I like the lines and color in this image. I feel indiffernet about the
cropping suggestions.

Great forms in the trees and great color! To me the sky in the URC is a little distracting, I might be tempted to crop some off the top.

Justin - that tree is incredibly interesting, as is the perspective and wonderful foliage. This is a great find and a wonderful image. I agree with the cropping suggestion, as the small patches of blue are a bit distracting. I always enjoy your images.

Thanks for all the critiques! Here's a cropped version. Not sure I get the full "twist" feel as I do in the original. Thoughts?

Barbara - I'm certainly not against cloning the sky out, I wanted to get some feedback on the image before considering that route.

I was referring to a crop that removed that big blue sky patch.. but I do like the loss of the bottom as well... the trees are the interest here, so I'd focus as much real estate on them and remove all other distracting elements.

Floris - Thanks for the feedback, I worked a crop off the top and lost too much of the tree for my liking. The best way I can deal with the sky will have to be cloning.

Nice find Justin. I have photographed these a couple times now but nothing I quite liked yet. Your find is cool. I do agree though on the sky crop that Floris mentions. Just taking those out in the top right corner helps a lot, for me at least. Keep up the good work.

Great "eye" to compose this scene. Chaotic and orderly at the same time. Beautiful. I would also suggest the cloning out of the blue sky. Print it large. :toast: :toast:

Cool looking old trees, and a neat perspective along with beautiful "fresh" looking conditions. Nice!

Nice gorge capture. Busy but lots of energy and well composed. I do like the cropped version a bit more.
