Marsh Wren 2

Another shot from my canoe taken a few days ago. May be the same bird - there were 3-4 in the marsh I was in.

Nikon D300; Sigma 500/4.5; f 5.6@1/800th; ISO 400; HH; Cropped to approx. 35%FF.

These birds sometimes pop up within the minimum focus distance of my lens, preventing me from getting a shot.

I thought I'd try extension tubes, to allow me to focus closer and fill more of the frame with the tiny bird, but the lens doesn't AF accurately with one on. Quick manual focussing isn't an option with this lens, handheld. Is there another technique, I'm missing?

All comments and suggestions most welcome.

Wonderful pose, perch, background and with the open beak it looks as the wren is just singing away. Nice detail on the larger version, well done.

Love the pose you have caught here. Great perch and nice soft background. Comp you have chosen works well. I think the mid-tones need to come up a little bit, as the image appears just a little flat. I went back and compared this one to the last wren that you posted and there is some definite difference in the richness.

Excellent!
Great perch, pose, BG and very fine detail.
I think I might cut a bit off the sides and make a more traditional crop. IMO, no need for all that dead space.
Well done!

I really like the singing pose on this one Tom. I agree with Angela about the mid-tones....you don't say it in your post, but it looks like you used a flash.
