Lake Mexia

I took this photo while kayaking and fishing on Lake Mexia. My wife and I stayed at my bosses lake house for the weekend. He had told me about seeing otters and eagles so I went prepared for taking lots of pics. Well, the weather was terrible the whole weekend and the otters and eagles didnt show themselves.

Nikon D200
35mm f/1.8 @ f/8
iso 200
shutter 1/80
handheld while fishing from my kayak
Converted to black and white using NIK Silver Efex Pro
For some reason this photo looked better to me in b and w. The color version seemed kinda dull. If that makes sense.

Hi John - This is a quite nice, calm scene. I like the reflection and the dead tree adds some nice interest to the image. I think that lightening the brighter tones could help add a bit more drama (I like lots of contrast in b+w images).

John,

Agree with Sarah's comments. The reflection is great, especially with the faint ripples creating some appealing texture in the water. The tree snag makes for a good focal point in the composition and the sky, even though it's gray and not very pretty out, at least has some detail and texture to it as well. I would agree with brightening the light tones as well considering that most of the tones here are middle-gray type tones.

Thanks for posting and I hope you get a chance to add some comments of your own.

I love the comp! I might go a tad darker with the blues in the sky, for more tonal range. And looks like you have a few posts under your belt--so time to share your thoughts with others
