Sun Bursting Through Fog

This was an incredibly spontaneous shot, taken (hand held) with almost no time to calibrate while out hiking with my wife in the Tiburon Uplands Nature Preserve on January 17, 2011 (Tiburon, CA).

Living just across the San Fransisco Bay for most of our lives, neither of us had ever been to this particular area before and were completely blown away by the incredible beauty of morning sunlight just bursting through the fog and the trees. The timing of this shot was so unbelievably critical because the fog was burning away so quickly that by the time I had setup my tri-pod to get another shot, it was completely gone!!!

Only the existing colors were brought out by increased vibrancy and saturation in Lightroom.

Canon 5D Mark II with EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM lens.
-1/2 EV
1/30 sec at f/4.0, ISO 50
Mode: Aperture Priority
Focal Length 105mm

I really like this--reminds me of my time in Arcata further north! Surprisingly sharp-and the forest looks like something out of a Henri Rousseau painting.

Spectacular sunburst. The setting is quite magical. There are a couple of spots where the purple looks a tad overcooked.

Kah Kit Yoog, thank you so much for pointing out those overcooked purples! I noticed those areas too, but didn't bother to correct them. Now, with just a simple adjustment using the HSL direct section tool in Lightroom, I was able to isolate that range and bring those purples down a bit. I think the image looks a lot better now!

Thanks again! Your critique was very much appreciated!
