Lack of Rain

This image shows a gathering of gators in a small pool in a canal.

A lack of rain in South Florida has resulted in dry conditions for many of the Everglades canals. As a result alligators suffer from a lack of food source and ease of travel. Where water was it is now dry land.

What strikes me is that the alligators gather for a few days in such pools and then leave, disperse into the tall grasses, I suppose to hunt food and water. This makes foot travel more dangerous to humans. For instance I saw a very large bull alligator exiting a stand of woods, a place they are not normally seen. This lack of water has also produced strange behavior in these animals.

Whenever I've walked up to alligators sunning on a canal bank, they've always pitched, hurled, and or slid into the water to escape me. But on this day a friend, Don MacDonald, and I had photographed these in the pool and then we left. He returned a couple hours later only to find no alligators. He decided to walk along the canal bank, when a large gator stood on all fours and hissed at him. It was then he realized that the couple of hundred alligators were sunning in the tall grass. Another few steps and he would have been in the middle of them as they did not move, but rather stood their ground. He said his skin crawled.

Very distressing for the gators and other animals and birds. :(

I'm glad your friend was able to ascertain the situation in time.

Your image shows a great depiction of the lack of natural living space for these alligators. Images of alligators for me would be that lone one on the shore line sliding into the water as a boat filled with film crew passes by - my only knowledge of alligators comes from nature shows past and present.

I would've never known the truth to be quite the opposit as your image shows - alligators fighting for space.

As humans we are constantly fighting for space, and not just for survival, but for financial gain and in so doing we cause natural habitats to shrink and disappear all together. Thanks for the post.

Wayne, very cool picture. I like this one better than the wildlife post, more gators and more eyeballs on the photographer. It's sad that our human engineering usually has such negative consequences for the environment. It's also pretty spooky to think about going for a walk in a field full of gators.

Whoa! This is right out of some horror flick. And then having them stand their ground when they're on land in large numbers. Seriously, this feels like Nature getting even.

The eyes carry this image. Cetainly makes a statement about unusual conditions and the response of animals.

Interesting story and nice capture. A couple of dozen gators in a space the size of a backyard pool? And probably more...very stressful for them.

A telltale detail for me is that you can see virtually nothing of the gators below the water surface, making it "clear" that the water conditions aren't so hot either. When I've visited the Glades in the past, I was always struck by the clarity of the water. This is as dense an assembly as I've ever seen of gators.

Both a sad and wonderful image. Really good shooting and an effective visual commentary.
