Delicate Storm

I know it is an icon, but I made my first trip to Utah in March and had to go see Delicate Arch at sunset. Had some great light, and a storm brewing in the distance. This was just before the sun hit the horizon, single exposure, 45mm, f/13, 1/20 of a sec, ISO 200.

It was a big pain getting the colors from my Pro Photo color space file converted down to the web. This was as close as I could get to my original intention, so let me know if you think anything needs tweaking. Just doing a "save for web" in photoshop led to some truly cartoony colors.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

That is a very, very good DA composition Scott. The lines, light and sky just all fit together perfectly.

What Marc said. I also like the lighting you caught, it highlights the arch well and yet allows great background drama.

Icon or not I like the shot, too. The favorable conditions are the key. Well done.

“This was as close as I could get to my original intention,”

I’m a photo processing rookie so I have to ask, would it not have been easier to simply work up an additional version for the web in sRGB rather than try to modify the Pro Photo version?

I like the scene. My preference would be for a bit more light in the shadows, though they do make for nice contrast against the arch here.

Thanks for the comments Marc and John, glad you like it.

Richard: Maybe, but I am not that great at photoshop yet and it takes a long time still, so I was too lazy to start over. :)

Tony: I agree, I went back and dialed down the foreground contrast boost I had added, while maintaining the sky contrast. Thanks for the critique, I like the tweaked version better.

This is a beauty Scott! I've never had any luck with conditions when i've visited. I agree with tony, and would add something; I would darken the FG arch area and lighten the BG hills a tad to balance out the tonality a bit. This image is definitely worth the extra effort. :toast:

Zach I just uploaded the version that I did in response to Tony's comments. Sadly I accidentally just overwrote the file on my ftp server instead of changing the name. So the main photo in this thread is just the new one. :) I am feeling lazy so I am not going to go back and recover the old version. Regardless, I think this version does a much better job of balancing the overall tones in the image.

Thanks again for the comments, I love that I get useful critiques here. It really makes you realize how much less useful most other photo sharing sites are.

Thanks again!
