Orbweaver spider

We have many of these spiders in my flower beds right now. I think it is a Basilica Orbweaver but not entirely certain. I was experimenting with using an extension tube on my telephoto zoom lens. I'm not particularly fond of spiders but they can be quite beautiful. Love the colors on this guy.

Canon Rebel T1i. 163mm with 31mm ext. tube. F/9 for 1/4 sec. ISO 200.

Carolyn,
I love the brilliant colors of the spider against the clean green background. Great dof too. :toast:

The colors and sharp hairy legs give you a great capture. Great BG also. :jump:

Carolyn:
I like the colors and the placement of the spider. The web is also clearly shown. The only minor nit is the focus seems to be on the abdomen rather than the head.

The colors on this spider are great. (I may have to look more carefully at the critters.) I also like the angled web and the solid green background. Very nice shot!

Hi Carolyn,
I'm fairly certain it's a Venusta Orchard Spider (Leucauge venusta) - Looks similar to the Basilica.
I think you did a great job @ 1/4 sec, very hard to get sharp at that SS.
Especially when one considers its 7mm size and the inherent web/air movement.
Well done :toast:

Thanks for all your comments! Allowing people to see and appreciate what they might not normally notice is what I like so much about macro photography.

Howard, thanks for your ID. After looking this up in my insect book before posting, I was not sure if it was a basilica or an orchard. It sounded like the basilica's legs were more green so I went with that but I really didn't know. I will go along with your ID since you sure know your critters. Re SS: the one end of the web was attached to the back of our shed so it was quite protected from the wind and the spider stayed quite still for me.
