Yellowbilled Cuckoo
by David Sparks
Photo taken October 8, 2010 at the Gulf Islands National Seashore (Ft. Pickens, FL). I was looking for a Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher that had been sighted by several birders in the area where I was hiking. I never saw the flycatcher but as I walked down the trail this Yellow-billed Cuckoo landed in a shady spot nearby with the tail pointed directly at me, but with a nice head turn. The bird later moved to a perch with more light and assumed a better pose, but this is the frame in which I had the best angle on the dragonfly.
D300, 500mm f/4 + 1.7x tc, 1/1000 s, f/6.7, ISO 1250, tripod.
Cropped to about 35% of full frame to remove the mostly-out-of-focus tail of the bird. Sharpening, noise reduction, and other adjustments using LR3. I used the graduated filter to reduce the brightness of the area above the bird and dragonfly.
I was planning to post a different frame that would not require such a large crop, but decided to post this one to get your reaction to the limb above the bird and the post-processing.
Comments and suggestions most welcome.

5 commentsThe BG is a little distracting, but the curves of the limb above provide an interesting element of framing to the subjects, and I think you handled the processing well for such an obviously challenging shot. Detail is excellent BTW :^)
