Last Man Standing

Kaikoura, NEW ZEALAND

Environmental portrait of this Black Shag (Cormorant) on the rocks as the tide was coming in. There were many more birds initially but I waited till there was only one to strengthen the composition.

Canon 5DMkII, 70-200mm 2.8L IS, ISO 300, f5.6, 0.4 seconds.

A very moody scene, I like the sky here together with the spray of the wave and the single commorant on the rocks. :toast:

Sweet shot Kah Kit, and perfect timing. You're correct that the bird strengthens the shot - gives it great balance too. Very nicely done.

Good choice waiting for the one bird. The wave splash looks fantastic! heck, the whole scene looks fantastic! Awesome shot.

While I love the splashing wave, it is your including of the cormorant that makes the picture standout.

Wonderful wave action Kah Kit made stronger by the presense and position of the cormorant. The drama in the sky is also a great backdrop.

Gorgeous and interesting work. I really like the inclusion of the bird, and agree that a solitary bird likely has much more impact in this sort of scene.

Wonderful spray motion you captured. Surprisingly good DOF. Even a little softness on the distant peaks might help separate the FG from the BG. I like the idea of the single bird. A beautiful sea side town. I had my first Flat White there. Learned later it was a latte, I thought it was coffee. Ended up getting sick in the tree line between the lower portions of town and the high bluffs above after 13 Flat Whites. I'll never forget Kaikoura!

Very nice details and exposure. Now all you have to do is repeat this with some dramatic skies. ;-)

Fantastic Kah Kit. Love how portrayed the nature of the place by adding bits of wildlife (even if its one bird).
Stunning capture
Perfect from front to back
