Oh, I also flipped this vertically for composition purposes. And I just noticed that there is some haloing around the bug for which I'll catch it, and should.

hey, Charlie, your processing seems to have left a halo around the bug. (: (Just had to say it) The fawn lily really sparkles and I'm a little disappointed with the abrupt termination of the petal the bugs on. Probably not something you could have done anything about but still a little jarring. Really nice detail and your dof is perfect.

charlie - love the flower , colours, and delicate lines. The buglet is great!
I also think the abrupt edge of the cut-off petal is awkward, and the black border emphasizes it further. A softer border - white or pink perhaps - would not make the petal so glaring.

Forgive me for not presenting the most artful image as you both have pointed out. This bug, bugged me while chasing it around this flower. It moved very fast and never seemed still and this is the only shot, of many, that it exposed itself very much, so I've cropped to try to emphasize what I thought was a different bug than I had seen before.

I like where you're going here Charlie. The flower and insect together provide good interest, and I like the overall comp/black BG. Hard to tell what the insect is, would need to see an unobstructed view.
Don't know what you're using for fill, but it over powers the image just a bit IMO.
On your pop-up flash: Try a small opaque plastic travel size lotion bottle, slit on one side. You just slide it over the flash head. I used it on my Olympus C8080 with good results.
Try to minimize your crop if you can also..The flower looks large enough that even with the 50mm you could've got closer?
Anyway, just my two cents..Hope it helps in some small way :wavey:
