Catlins, New Zealand

I brought my workshop to this location on the southernmost point of New Zealand, almost exactly a year after I last photographed it. We were treated to a virtual replay of the sunrise I had experienced here the last time.

I've also posted a blog about the differences between what I shot in 2010 and 2011 as well as a different approach to shutter speed this year found ’here’

I love the wet look of the kelp in the FG, also the water color. The sky color looks a bit intense to me, but I'm on an uncalibrated monitor at the moment, so that may account for that.

This is a wonderful photo. I visited your site and checked out the version from last year. It is amazing how similar the conditions were. Great color saturation in this image and I like the shutter speed that retained enough detail to get the sense of the waves. The color fringing the seaweed is awesome. Nicely done.

Now that's just not fair  . I remember when you posted last year's version and I feel that you've improved on it! The only thing I can nit on is that there seems to be a bright area just to the right of the crashing wave on the uppermost rock...almost like flare, but that can't be it because the sun isn't up yet. I'm sure it is natural, but if it were mine I would try to burn it down a bit to have it match the rest of the rock. It doesn't change the fact that this is a fantastic image!

Gorgeous capture, Kah Kit! Nice work with the shutter and composition. Love the light reflecting off of the kelp. Well done! :toast:

remarkable similarity in the conditions. Coincidence? come to Spain and bring the weather with you :-) Great image, full of energy and life.

This is really sweet, Kah Kit. Foreground is quite unique and the color contrasts makes for a very dynamic image. The middle-ground water feels a bit bright on my monitor, but this sense of interior light in the image is very nice.

This is so pretty. It is also pretty amazing how close your conditions were to last year. Beautiful colors and the water looks fantastic. I do prefer this new one over last years now too. I agree with what you said in your blog about more water definition making for a more dynamic image. It does for me, and it was nice to see the 2 together. Really nice work Kah Kit.

Almost perfect. All the elements --- the color reflection off the kelp of the foreground, the splashing waves on the middle-ground, and the gorgeous colors of the sky --- play very well together.

This year's is much better...though think for me personally I would have moved slightly right and put the edge of the kelp to the bottom right corner...however...that's a nit and this rocks. Even the splash in the midground. Redonkulous color. Kudos

Beautiful color and light Kah Kit. It is amazing how close your 2 images are to one another. If I had to choose between the two I would pick 2010 version. I like the light on the foreground seaweed a bit better as well as the detail in the shadows. However, I like the water better in the 2011 version. Both are wonderful in their own ways.

Got to like the shutter speed you chose here, though your 2010 shot was pretty strong too. Really like this shot. It would have been nice even with a more mild sky. Also, I appreciate your blog post on shutter speeds . . . excellent food for thought.

Actually, the return trip yielded a better result imo! Both are excellent, but the sky is even better here, as is the shutter speed.

Nice!

I love everything about this image. The light, the sky with its color, the water action, the foreground and the light. The processing is also perfect. :toast:

Looking at them together on your blog, I prefer the new version. Partly because its closer to what I'd see if I stood there, but mainly I think for the dynamism the shorter exposure gives it. Both wonderful images though.

Kah Kit,

Fascinating and beautiful seascape. Tough to compare the two, but I'm leaning towards this version. I really like the flow of the water just beyond the sea kelp/plants in the LL. The sky is on fire across the entire horizon and the water action in the sea is wonderful as well. This is just marvelous. No nits or suggestions.

This looks great Kah, the hint of reds reflecting off the foreground seaweed are very nice as is your choice of shutter speed.

Hi Kah Kit - Of all the seascapes I can recall seeing over the last few months, this one definitely rises to the top. There is so much to enjoy about this scene. The texture in the water is perfect, the warm highlights add a lot of interest, and the composition is quite compelling. Really wonderful image.

Nice shot Kah Kit. Love the deep red, wonderful detail and dynamic action.

I think you could lesson the heaviness (grad indication?) on the right upper corner a little.

Your first shot was great, but this is over the top. The color filling the entire sky, the wave action, and the color reflections on the seaweed really make this outstanding. :toast:

I like the motion portrayed in this version compared to the earlier shot. The faster shutter has created a stronger dynamic by freezing the crashing waves rather than smoothing them out. Both are wonderful shots, but it is interesting how much the mood can be changed using shutter speed.

Gorgeous Kah!
I just wonder, maybe the place experience those sunsets every day? That would be great...though quite boring in the end LOL
Wonderful image. I love the movement there and the textures of the algi repeating that of the water. Maybe the little splash in the distance attracts too much the eye? Well done!
