What the stork bringeth.

...he can also take back.

I had not realized storks would predate other birds species and their chicks. On arrival at the hide in the Marquenterre bird reserve in France I was almost ready to move on, just more damn gulls but I decided to have a drink. Suddenly the gulls went wild and I figured a sparrow hawk had flown over? Then I watched astounded as the stork picked off half a dozen live chicks from the vegetation.

Shooting him was hard, the holes in the hides are made for binoculars not 500mm lenses, so it is all hand held through a small hole :| at 700mm (on the 7D!) so quality suffered and I noticed a lack of contrast. Damn birdwatchers hides.

Nature red in tooth and claw - and beak in this case. I have recently watched gulls of various species doing similar things to small chicks of other species, and mugging puffins for the food they carry, so they are no different to the stork. It's just a matter of survival I guess.

blimey, no wonder the adult gulls don't look happy. Certainly an interesting bit of behaviour you've captured.

Yes, I had never seen such behaviour nor can I find much on the web about it.

I had no sympathy for the gulls after watching them on the Farnes ;)
