I'd never been to this viewpoint of the Grand Canyon before but several NPN members recommended it so I checked it out for a sunset on my trip there last week. Two shot blend - one for sky, one for foreground and canyon.

C&C appreciated.

A lovely location and good composition. I think, though, this might be better in color. There is not enough tonal range for B & W drama, for my tastes, anyway.

Hi Barry,
I like the light here, in my personal taste I'd like to see a little more contrast but maybe the shadows will be then too blocked.

Here's a re-post where I tried to pull more contrast out particularly on the left side and on the canyon. I left the sky and the lower right corner alone. It's a subtle change but I think it will make a difference on the print (which by the way is definitely has a bit more "punch" than the web version. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Hi Barry. I actually have a Shoshone point shot under similar lighting conditions, though a different composition. I have yet to post it as I can't get the processing quite right, but it's issues are pretty complex. I must say though, knowing these specific lighting conditions at this specific location, I definitely favor black and white. I disagree that there is not enough tonal range, I just don't think you maximized the tonal range during the conversion. I think the "warm" end of the color spectrum (yellow/red/orange) could have used more brightness. I'm very familiar with Silver Efex, I obviously don't know what settings you used exactly, but I think the color filter adjustment could've used a push in the warm direction, or a brightness boost in the warms on the color sensitivity adjustment. Whatever the case, re-converting in Silver Efex is a quick deal, and I think the tonal range potential could easily be maximized. Anyway, you've got an awesome comp and some incredible drama going on here! Great work

This is really well done, Barry. The comp and light are perfectly done, IMO, and bothimages look fine.

Did you notice that at this point (on the South Rim) you can actually look south towards the San Francisco Peaks by Flagstaff and still see canyon between you and the peaks?

Very fine image here! :toast:

I would say the conversion looks a little too grey though. The second version I think is better.

Thanks for the very helpful comments. I started completely over and re-processed the entire image. I didn't realize how grey and muddled it was until I stepped back and started over from the beginning. Here's the result. Much better I think thanks to the comments received.
