Tranquility

I recently got out for one more tour of the spring greens in the Columbia River Gorge. I found this intimate little scene along a creek deep in the Washington side of the Gorge. I titled this one "Tranquility", because that's exactly how I felt while I was there. The sound of the water and the beauty of all the greens was mesmerizing.

4 image blend for DOF and dynamic range. All at f/8, ISO 200.

I like how the green here practically glows! Are those foreground plants edible? I seem to remember these from when I lived in the NW, but only smaller. If so, you've really done some nice work with perspective here.

Beautifull composed Scott! The light and green tones are right on.
Many would have not seen the strong FG image that you've included.

Beautiful! This is really nice work Scott. Wonderful composition and light, and all the rocks under the water look great.. I like the feeling with the glow this seems to have.

Wow, I've never seen clover look so good in a shot, what a great anchor for the bottom. The falls are very attractive, and the scene just drips with the emerald we have this time of year. Well done!

Holy shi**** I just viewed this through Firefox as apposed to Internet Explorer and it's greens are dead on and completely different!!! Please ignore my greens comment! Also, this just opened a can of worms for me. I have a calibrated monitor but have used Internet Explorer all these years and it is not color managed! So half of all my past feedback on this forum could be way off!!! This really, really disturbs me!

Having just come back from the Gorge for the first time, i have a new appreciation for images form that area and this is no exception. The greens are incredible, the depth is great, exposure is perfect and those clovers make me feel like I'm in Ireland...great job!!

Thanks to everyone for all of the comments. I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying the image.

Mark- Thanks for confirming that the colors look good in Firefox It's crazy to me how oversaturated the colors look in IE (greens, magentas and blues are usually the worst for me). I've pretty much given up on using IE for anything photography related for this reason. Firefox and Safari are definitely my favorite web browsers for photography due to the color management. One interesting thing about this issue is that the color differences between the different web browsers are most pronounced when using calibrated monitors (on uncalibrated monitors it doesn't seem to be an issue). It's almost like everyone who is posting feedback here needs to state what web browser they are using and whether or not they are using a calibrated monitor...otherwise the comments given may be way off.

Love the delicate FG plants, the "hidden" falls, and the intense greens. Nice comp. :toast:

Holy shi* Scott this one almost humiliates me!!! I'm writing a big thread about it now on NPN Discussion Forum. I have been using IE for all the years I have been a photographer and that means that almost all of the feedback I have given here has been WRONG!!! I mean WTF? What is the point of us giving each other fine tuned feedback/critique if we are not all on good calibrated monitors AND a UNIVERSAL BROWSER that is COLOR MANAGED!!!??? Please feel free to add your feedback once I post there...

Again sorry, and sorry to all that have received any of my feedback because we are all looking at TOTALLY DIFFERENT things!

Mark - It's crazy isn't it? I definitely think this is something that needs to be addressed. I remember TK wrote about this issue in comments from some of his images many months ago, but I never saw anything formal about it on the NPN website.

Scott - what a lovely scene perfectly photographed! Columbia River Gorge is so beautiful and I love the way you show us how the leaf of the trefoil sees it! When the weather is really foul there - what it mostly is - the colors really start glowing! Great shot!
Cheers Christian! :toast:

Scott, your composition with the curved riverbank leading into the depth works extremely well for me. I enjoy the near and distant elements as different points of interest, that complement each other. Your color processing is amazing to my eye, and I also especially appreciate the subsurface structures.

A beautiful shot, Scott. Love the quality of light.. quite magical really. A nice comp with the low angle and leading line. Greens and yellows look great... more yellow in the greens on my calibrated nec monitor (using Firefox w/color management), but still very natural looking to me. Really enjoying your work.

Really a lovely spot, the huge clover? in the FG is very appealing, and such saturated greens too...

The fresh green clover leaves make a very nice anchor and lead. The angle of the falls matching the curve of the shore and clovers works well together.

Scott,
Very nicely done. The greens are very well done and tonality and light is really great. The composition is carefully done also with a great lead-in line and foreground interest and the wonderful waterfalls in the background and the greenery.

Looks excellent to me. A lush, inviting scene. Have to say I can't recall clover being used as a foreground anchor in any shot I've seen previously . . . or at the very least, it wasn't used as memorably as it is here.

Man those are some big looking clovers. I thought for awhile all you guys out west there were saturating the heck out of your forest scenes but it must be that green. Just gorgeous atmosphere.

Nice work Scott

Hi Scott - this is so beautiful. The clover in the foreground is great, as is the curving line on the right. Even though the cascade is small, it is a powerful element in this scene. The colors are bright, but I still think they accurately represent the feeling of the Gorge. Really nice work!
