This species has frustrated me for a long time. Between the time I take the shot and when I open the file on my PC, their eyes actually disappear!

I was quite surprised to actually get a clear view of the eye on this specimen .

Nikon D200; Sigma 500/4.5; f 6.3@ 1/1600th; ISO 320 HH; approx. 60%FF.

All comments and suggestions most welcome. Thanks for looking.

A fine flight shot. I have the same trouble with the eyes on skimmers (as well as terns). I like the dark bg here and the wing position.

This looks good to me Tom. The slight look back at you with that light on the head and eye makes this work well even though the bird is already past you. I like the darker background here too. Your comment about their "eyes disappearing" made me chuckle for sure as I full well know exactly what you mean!

I hear you on the eyes...tough to get a catchlight and nicely visible eyes on these dark-hooded terns...nice job with it here. Do like how you get the little looking-back feel with his pose here.

All those black-hooded gulls and terns are a challenge; you've done well here, and especially good work getting the subtle greys in the back.

Lovely image, Tom. I like the angle of the bird and the wing position.

Very nice Tom. The tern shows up beautifully against the dark background.
