Prairie Rainbow

This cloud seemingly came out of nowhere this weekend in the open prairie of western Kansas, and the rainbow shown brightly for a few minutes. I was aways away when it appeared, and I had to rush to find a location to photograph it from. The complete rainbow only lasted a couple of minutes, before slowly dissolving away as the cloud moved. I have seen a cloud formation like this before, but don't know what the name for it is. 7D, ISO 200, f/11, 1/500, small crop

Fantastic cloud form (maybe one of our meteorologist friends (Stan) on the site can provide more detail) and rainbow Rob. Too bad you missed the complete rainbow but this is wonderful none the less.

Neat what Nature can come up with. Really like the cloud textures and the rainbow is a nice focus point.

Neat shot. It's pretty surprising to get rain in your part of the country from a cloud so limited both in height and width. The rainbow is really nice and I like how it's shooting out of the cloud at an angle that's different from the rainfall directions.

Great eye in composing this Rob. The cloud is framed perfectly and it really gives a sense of the vastness that is your state. Wonderful rainbow to boot.
