Tranquility

I captured this image during a trip to Gwaii Haanas National Park and Marine Reserve in July of 2011. When I first viewed this scene, with its myriad shades of green and brown and with the tiny waterfall trickling tannin-stained water over the old fallen log, I felt a strong sense of tranquility and peacefulness. Adding to this sense was the absolute calmness of the air - this is an 8 second exposure and if you look closely at the larger version of the image you'll notice that even the finest and lightest foliage is completely sharp (i.e., they didn't BUDGE over the 8 seconds that the image sensor was being exposed to light).
Anyway...thought I'd share the forest with you...

Subject: Creek in Rainforest
Location: Burnaby Island, Gwaii Haanas National Park and National Marine Reserve, Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), BC, Canada
Camera: Nikon D3s
Lens: Nikkor 70-200mmmm f2.8 VR!! lens at 92mm with B&W circular polarizing filter. Supported on carbon fibre Gitzo GT2541EX tripod and AcraTech Ultimate ballhead. Cable release and mirror-up release mode used.
Exposure: 8 sec at f16. ISO 100. No compensation from matrix metered exposure.
Crop: Very - this is about 95% of full-frame image

All the gory details about the image (more image capture considerations, processing details, etc.) can be found here:

Comments and critiques welcomed - probably best to view the larger version prior to doing so...

Cheers...thanks for looking...

Brad

Wonderful scene, Brad. I like the way you composed this and really appreciate that little trickle coming over the log in the midground. Very tranquil indeed.

Brad, your composition with the horizontals together with the verticals provides a good framing to my eye. I especially enjoy the details of the mosses in the foreground as well as the delicate reflection of the greens. Thanks for sharing.

An overall wonderful image and the elaboration of your details of exposure and description of the day make this one very special photo.

Hey Brad,

I can't go into full detail at the moment but this is probably my favorite on the page. There is a peace and mystery here that isn't quite projecting I guess for others, I think. To me it's really special. Your processing is natural but I would love to process this one if it were mine. Lovely layers and subtle light. Magical and secret.......nice job
