A magical morning today (Sunday) at a viewpoint overlooking an entrenched meander of the Colorado River in Marble Canyon.
Clouds made the previous evening's sunset a wash, and threatened to do so this morning. 'Twas not to be, though!

Canon 5DII w/17-40 lens @ 17mm
1/4 sec. @ f16 ISO 100
Used a polarizer to make the rainbow 'pop'.
A special 'Thanks!' to Tony Kuyper, whose digital darkroom actions were essential in crafting the final version of the image.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated as always. The top of the rainbow was invisible to the eye, so I chose to include more foreground. As always, the larger version has much more detail.

John,

Your the first one I've seen that used a polarizer for a rainbow, I've been told polarizers make them disappear, obviously I was misinformed, I suspected as much. This is a cracking outstanding image John, with last weeks challenge being rain there was a proliferation of rainbows in that gallery. The detail, the sky, the intensity, the whole scene , impressive.

Thanks, Paul!
Polarizers do indeed make rainbows disappear in one setting, but the opposite setting makes them 'pop' in the most delightful way. It's one of the few times I'll use one on a wide angle lens.

Just incredible! You don't post too often, but when you do, it"s usually something quite special.

Excellent composition with dramatic light, John. Your processing looks great here in what was probably a difficult shot to process because of the dynamic range.

Another super image John! Everything is awesome in this shot. I have Tony's luminosity masks but never used them,,,I'm somewhat technically challenged in PS.

I like the centered composition supported by the arc of the rainbow and the impressive terrain in that area. Overall an excellent shot - especially the large version is wonderful.

John,
The river bend and the rainbow curve augment each other very well. I like the processing you did. Well done! :toast:
I am curious why you chose f/16 given the wide angle and no close object, as I would think f/8 would give sharper results.

Nicely done. A polarizer, wide angle lens and a rainbow usually don't work but this worked our well.

What a treat! The larger version really lets the textures come to life. My only wish is to have seen a bend that was a little bigger/deeper/stronger.. perhaps I've seen too many horseshoe bend shots  Anyways, this really captures the beauty of a summer monsoon in the vast redrock landscape.

Very cooperative rainbow indeed John, it couldn't have popped up in a better place. Fantastic landscape really well captured.

What a scene! I'd be tempted to give the shadowed landscape a touch mor epop, but not much. Would love to get out there in monsoon season one day.

Hi John,

Overall, a dynamic and jaw dropping scene with killer light. The symmetry of the rainbow with it being cut off in the middle bothers me some. I also think the canyon lacks a certain crispness - possibly a result of underexposure or something else? Don't get me wrong, this is a crazy shot that I'd be thrilled to have, it's just that reviewing your overall incredible body of work I'd say this is pretty much middle of the road.

John that is some shot. It has a three dimensional look and even with out the rainbow it would be a great shot. The rainbow sends it into the stratosphere. :toast: :toast:

Marvelous image, John! As Pasteur said: chance favors the prepared mind. I especially appreciate your processing here. It would have been too easy to overwhelm the viewer with contrast and saturation but your approach retains a rich complexity and balance of color and detail, creating a calm mood that I can very easily relate to. This deserves to be printed large and presented prominently.
