Canon 7D,400mm 5.6 lens, ISO500,f7.1, 1/1600sec. Taken full sun hand-held with shoulder brace. Approx 60% crop.Tough to get detail in eyes & bodies of these guys. Wings are their saving grace.

Roger:
What is it with this perch that attracted so many DF to land on it?
The wing pattern in this DF is very distinctive and beautiful. Although not as sharp as your other in flight df, it is still a keeper.

I might consider reducing the brightness of that back wing, Roger. It seems to pull my eye away from the dragonfly. It's really a pretty minor thing, but I'm finding the brightest areas in the image are drawing my attention. So, rather than focusing my attention on the head of Mr. Dragon here, I'm looking at his wing. Maybe the stick could be just a bit darker as well.
Nice shot! I'm enjoying these dragon-in-flight shots!

Great image---I like the landing posture like a plan coming in to land on an aircraft carrier. It's hard to get shots like this.

Thanks, everyone. Varina, I'll try the adjustments you advise. Gary, the perch is a twig sticking up from a stagnant pond. Just the kind of habitat the DFs love. There are several twigs on which they land (you can see in my galley) but I like this one because it is prominent with a good background.

Roger,
Great image!! Like the tension of the subject getting ready to land on the twig. Nicely done!

Good detail at the head, legs, and upper thorax Roger.
Your right, DF's are quite a challenge inflight.
About all you can do is try for the max DOF, and minimize your crop for that detail you're after
