Misty Mountain Morning

I spent this particular morning at Crater Lake NP, but the best views were looking west. The subject is somewhat cliche, but I like the soft glow before sunrise and the interplay between the mountain shadows and mist. This was shot at 200mm, some dodging and burning. My initial thought was that the blues were too strong ( I actually took them down quite a bit from the original capture), but in the end liked the combination of cool and warm hues. Thoughts?

Love the color, as well as layered mountain range.

I, too, like your combination of colors. Well done. :toast:

Definately some intense colors here. This is a more abstract kind of image and lends itself to greater interpretation in your processing of it as well. The peaks in the right center seem to draw me in immediately when I view the image, so I might have zoomed in tighter on this area while retaining much of the layering in the top 2/3. Still could be done cropping, but image size would suffer. Looks like a very peaceful morning up there, and an unexpected comp. from Crater Lake area from other images I have seen. Reminds me of the classic Blue Ridge Mountains images.

Cliche or not Chris, very well done. I like the comp as is, but a slight crop from the bottom to that second dark layer would slightly improve this I think. And like Harry, this reminds me of shots I've seen from the Blue Ridge Mountains. In fact, that's where I thought this was taken when I first viewed the thumbnail!

I thought this image was from the Smokies instead of Oregon too before reading the description. Nice view! The blues seem fine to me since they are well balanced with the Earth-shadow pink in the sky. I like that the dodging and burning you performed seems very natural too. Wonderful job!

Thanks for the comments. As some of you suggested, I revised the crop, and I do think this works better.

I love your composition, and the second crop is even better. The colors in the sky are gorgeous too. I don't mind some blue in the shadows, but the cyans in the mist are too heavy, imo.

Wow, gorgeous Chris! Beautiful layers and intense color, but not over done. Definitely like the revised crop best.

Chris I really like the crop of the second post, although I have to agree with Chris C. on the saturation of the cyans, just a little to electric for my tastes. The layered look, although cliche, works very well.

Beautiful depth and intense colors. I also slightly prefer the second.

I took another stab at it, targeting the cyans-- I took them down -35 and altered the color balance slightly. Thanks for the guidance!

Beautiful layers and color, and the fog takes this to a higher level. Love it.

Chris I like the crop and slight reprocess. I might try going one step further and crop off the dark band at the bottom. Takes away some of the harmony in the image for me as it is considerably darker than the next band of shadows above it. A little too abrupt anchor for me. Either way, very cool shot. :toast:

Harry, thanks for the follow up comments. I kept the darker band at the bottom to help anchor the image, but I see your point about the abrupt transition. I'll play with it some more.
