Hudson River Post-Irene

I took this with my Canon G11 while walking the Walkway Over the Hudson on Saturday; this is between Ulster and Dutchess Counties, Ulster having been one of the three worst-hit counties in the state by Hurricane Irene and subsequent rains. The normally blue river is now muddy brown wih this green stuff floating in it.

Ugh. Swimming anyone? Hard to tell if the streaks are emulsified oil, sewage, algae or a mix.

While I'm unfamiliar with the area and view, the graphic forms on the water and the urban details, especially on the left, help me plug into this image. It will be even more effective for anyone who knows it. It's a difficult subject on a massive scale, but in fact the water IS the subject matter. At lower elevation you'd lose the shape of the streaks, even as detail became more apparent.

I usually associate hurricane damage with the gulf states, Florida, the Carolinas. Irene was an eye-opener for me as far as how wide spread the damage can be. Your image reinforces that.

On today the anniversary of the Great Hurricane of 1938 which devastated Long Island and New England, I want to thank everyone for their comments on this photo. Nancy Lea, your comment is the best I've ever had on any of my photos in my entire life. If I can expand people's awareness in that way, then this photo has done what I meant it to do.

Not "pretty" but a great capture of an epic event-- good PJ! The scope of the flood is made evident by the inclusion of some of the surrounding homes, docks, etc. Congrats on the EP, Nancy!
