Warbling Vireo

I had some new migrating visitors last week, here's another species of vireo from my work..I shot this in a vertical orientation, and composed it the best I could. Any comments welcome..
The Warbling Vireo may be made up of two or three species. The eastern and western forms differ slightly in size, bill shape, genetics, molt strategies, wintering areas, and possibly voice. Western birds are slightly smaller, have smaller, darker bills, are more olive-green on the upperparts, and have a darker crown than the eastern birds.
F/10, 1/800th, ISO 400, 1D M3, 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4x ext around 10:00am, clear & sunny.

The comp works for me, and the background colors and blurring are wonderful. Great light. Nice detail on the belly in the larger view.

I really like the actual capture of the Vireo Howard, crisp, sharp, and not at all bothered that it's slightly turning away from you. The only thing I'm not mad keen on is the vertical format, ideally for me this would be horizontal with more space in front of the subject to look into. I'd hazard a guess and say that at the time you went vertical with your camera the subject was looking more in your direction; Murphy's Law ;^)

Just wanna' underline that it's a cracking shot of the bird itself :^)

Another nice vireo. Good light and exposure; nice detail. I don't think the composition works as well with this as it did with the Blue-headed, though - a bit too much empty space below the perch.

Beautiful lighting and excellent detail in this Vireo, Howard. Superb job on the exposure. This bird appears a bit darker than the Warbling Vireos we see here in Illinois, I am thinking it may be a western form.

I like the perch and the head angle in this one Howard. I am fine with the comp.

Nice Howard. Good detail and a great bg. I agree that the vertical comp is not ideal here. Just playing with it on screen, it works better to me as a square chopping the bottom off just below the perch.

Squared? I avoided this option because it doesn't leave much from the original..

Picture perfect photo of a Warblling vireo, I prefer the squared repost, doesn't appear to have suffered from the cropping.

Excellent shot Howard, the larger version has good feather detail and the background is great. I like the first crop but do agree maybe a horizontal crop might have been a little better but hard to tell unless you look at them side by side. Either way a fine shot, way to go.

Hey Howard, I personally like the repost, IMO it brings the Warbling Vireo, up close and personal. :wavey:

I prefer the second squarish version Howard. Is this the eastern or western variety then? I just wish he had given you a little better eye contact, an excellent shot nonetheless. :toast:

Nice light Howard and I agree about different crop then I saw your repost. Looks good. Myonly wish would be a slight head turn toward us. Great exposure

Nice light and good exposure.
Not sure about the comp - might work better as a vertical.
