East Falls, Sonora Pass

It was a quiet summer morning in 2010 in the Sonora Pass country of the Sierra. There was only the slight sigh of the morning breeze, the solidity of Sierra granite, clear water falling, and the aroma of penny royal and pine.

It doesn't get much better than that.

Very pretty little waterfall. I know you wanted to include the flowers, but the comp from this angle seems uncomfortable. You probably looked at every possible angle to include more of the base of the waterfall, but maybe even one step to the right and including only the largest group of flowers might have opened the 'fall up a little more.
Just my thoughts..
Sounds like a spectacular day!

Sandy, thanks for your comment. I too would have liked to see tha base of the fall. However, I was already at the egde of a slippery drop off, so further movement to the right was not possible. The only other option was to descend a slab covered with pebbles and then stand in very cold water; not something I wanted to do with a large format camera.

Yes, it was a great day!

Beautifully composed. Love the soft light on the rocks. I do wish the shutter speed had been faster to give more texture to the water though.

From your description I almost feel like I'm sitting there watching this unfold. I can smell that aroma. The vegetation really makes this photo. Delicate plants against hard rock structures builds some nice tension with the addition of great colors. Well done Preston.

the details here are really superb and I don't know how you could compose this scene any better. Well done.

I like the light spilling in at the top, the color in the bottom, and the nice little falls connecting them both. Very nice!

You have a great eye for these kind of scenes. The cascade is well composed with beautiful color. In a perfect world I would like just a smidge more room at the bottom of the frame as the flowers are a little close to the bottom of the frame...but that is still very minor.

Well Preston, I think the sounds and smells of a nice porterhouse on the grill might come close! But I'd take the stimuli to the senses you describe anyday. A beautiful little spot!

Preston,

If I had to stack this up against many of your other Sonora Pass images, this one wouldn't be one of my favorites, but there's nothing to really criticize here. I do especially like the little traces of first light up top, especially hitting the little sapling. The flowers at the bottom are a nice touch, but slightly cramped.

But for sure this brings me right back there - wish I was there right now. There's nothing like the smell of that penny royal stuff.

I really do enjoy your intimates Preston. The dabs of colors from the flowers scattered about are a nice feature.
Well done

This is a relaxing scene. I am with Lon and would not rank it at the top of my PB's greatest hits, but it soothes quite nicely.

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

Maybe next year, I'll get down to the creek for a different view.

Beautiful image, Preston. Really like how the line of the rocks on the left hand side seem to mirror the flow of the water, creating a graceful curve in your composition. The flowers play the role of a delightful surprise for the viewer.
