Here's another shot from our trip to Argentina. This was taken at the same setup area that May Haga's Bay-winged Cowbird and Sayaca Tanager were taken at. Since they were feeding the birds already at the lodge I asked the manager if he minded if I moved the feeders around and since our group of 8 were the majority of people staying there he had no problem with it. As is usually the case the feeders were set in trees where it was difficult to get a pleasing background. So I took a bench and placed a couple of larger perches on it, they had to be fairly stout perches to stand up on their own and hold the feeders. I then placed flash stands which held nice flowers to either side of the bench. These were used less frequently than the main perches but when something did land there it was nice.

About this shot, I prefocused on the top of one of the perches on the bench and as birds would fly from one of the adjacent trees I would start firing away. I kept my eye outside the viewfinder to do this. You get a lot of throw aways with this technique but with persistence you can get a few nice ones. This is cropped to vertical, it's about 55% of the original image.

Crazy difficult shot and you almost nailed it with sharpness being the only issue. I wish that this photo showed off the birds plumage better (with open wings) but I'd be happy with this image.

The head looks plenty sharp to me Luke, there's some motion blur in the claws, I would have liked a faster shutter speed but I don't like to go much above 400 iso with the 7D.

LP looks great Nate, one of the coolest landing poses I've seen.
Exposure's right on the money, nice BG and colors :toast:

Yes, I should have clarified. The head and perch are sharp but the rest is not which is a speed issue and a DOF issue but I think it detracts somewhat as the head is small in the frame and the perch and BG are rather uninteresting (which is not to say that the background isn't pleasing)

Excellent shot Nate, looks like a gymnastic getting ready to grab the bar. The background and details are wonderful.

Crazy, unusual image Nate. Would rather see the wings but this is kinda cool looking. Difficulty must have been a ten. You nailed the exposure for sure. It almost looks as though it's falling through the air hoping to land on the perch. Neat image Nate. Thanks for teh set up info.

Brilliant capture Nate, a real crowd pleaser to be sure! The method you describe to acquire this sort of shot is something I also discovered a little while back and am looking forward to getting out again soon enough to get some more practice in. Thanks for sharing this!

Totally cool landing pose Nate. It makes me smile when I look at it, the bird is concentrating so hard to make the landing work.
Love it.

Hey, Nate, thanks for commenting on my Grey Heron and the tip about the Sigma lens.

I love this kind of shot - it's the kind I go for when I'm photographing birds (landing, taking off, any kind of action). The perch has a bit too much present and distracts for the oriole, but the scene is great and well-timed. Cheers.
