Red Foam at Pelluhue

For a while I've been admiring a big number of wonderful submissions to NPN that one way or another enhance the classic cliché "Sunset at the Beach". This inspired me to try some of it by myself.

Here's one I made a few weeks ago, in a winter day in coastal Chile. The place is Pelluhue, a small coastal town in central Chile. What I wanted to do was play a bit with the slow exposure effect on the last tip of the waves in the sand. I got several shots with these small foam patches combined with the retreating wave. I think this one shows this idea, but I'll be more than happy to see what the community thinks. (Larger version also available.)

Photo: single frame at f/16, 1 sec, ISO 200, with 18mm.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rodrigo - I love the patterns in the waves. The patterns in the sea foam add a lot of interest and I like the composition overall.

Edit: I went back and looked at this on a different monitor and decided to delete a comment about the colors, as they look good on my calibrated monitor.

Along with some rich colors, you've got tons of motion going on here. Very well done, Rodrigo.

A fabulous fg, Rodrigo. Love the low angle and the way the foam of the wave edge slowly stretches out into the shot with the wave motion. The reflected color is also very nice from that wonderful sky. My only nit is there seems to be some noticeable barrel distortion on the horizon. Perhaps a little bit more detail in the rocks would have been nice too. Lovely shot!

Gorgeous scene and light. Good eye for the unusual element. This feels a bit underexposed to me, but it does put a nice emphasis on the drama of the textures.

I really like warm reflected light and overall a very nice scene. Great sky, too.

This is a gorgeous sunset and I think you got the exposure just right. It's a unique combination of sharp detail plus softened water. Well done, Rodrigo!
