That is so cute! I like the composition. The background is suitably out-of-focus thus keeping the image very simple and uncluttered. I think conventional wisdom would say the owl's body should be facing into rather than out of the picture but the turn of the head and the green branch acts to draw the eye back into the picture. That creates a little tension for me and makes it a more dynamic image. The green branch in the otherwise brown image nicely balances the owl and log. Beutifully done!

The bg and colours are really nice here Graham, and the eye contact is great

Attractive subject and lighting, but the space on the right doesn't work for me. I think there is enough asymmetry within the image to crop away the empty space, or even to crop back to a 3 x 2 format and lose the green ribbon at the top of the frame as well.

lovely image -
its just me, but i'd crop out the green at the top, and just a smidge from the rhs.
(but as ever croppping is personal preference)

lovely i woudl be very proud of this though I would as Joanna has advised lose the top green line. I would prop. clone it out to keep dimensions.

Thanks for comments everyone, much appreciated and definately a split decision......
The green band is a hedgeline which is about 1/2 a mile behind the site. I cropped down a little from the top, but didn't want to crop the life out of the image. As for cloning it out, I wouldn't personally want to do that as it was there when I took the shot, but that's another issue.....
