Pronghorn

This male is in full rut and was trying to manage a very large harem at Flaming Gorge earlier this week and he wasn't having an easy time of it. One of the females kept trying to escape and he would have to race after her, cut in front of her and herd her back to the harem. Here he is chasing her down at high speed at the top of a hill just as the sun was about to set, thus the very warm light. The female is just out of frame at bottom as he races to get ahead of her and cut her off.

7D, 1/1600, f/5.6, ISO 640, EV +0.67, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, shot from pickup window on 9/21/11, minor highlight reduction in ACR, cropped to 60% of original image, selectively sharpened, no additional processing or adjustments

Wonderful action image of an animal I love. Almost never say I'm envious, but to have a close (relatively) opportunity to shoot one (camera) in action would be a thrill. It is a nice warm light but not excessive at all. Splendid!

Really like the way you caught this Pronghorn bounding uphill with pretty much all hoofs off the ground Ron. Also real nice detail and composition, and to top it off you have all this in such beautiful lighting, very nicely done and thanks for sharing!

I think the composition of this image is really fine with the slope of the hill leading the viewer's eye toward where the subject is going. Combine that with nice lighting and catchlight and you have a great image.

Awesome light as well as action here Ron. I like it that the body is entirely above the 'horizon'. The catch light is also a good addition. I only think a different stride pose (without the legs overlapping the way they do) would make a stronger image; perhaps you have one in a different pose?

Great stop action Ron, it looks like this pronghorn is moving at a pretty good clip.
I like the late light/warm color & diagonal/uphill landscape, nice POV and comp too.
Well done!:toast:

Do like how you caught him with only one foot on the ground! Well done. Great action shot of a pronghorn at speed. Thanks for sharing.

Ron - what's not to love here? The light, the action, the strong diagonal line which adds dynamics...

Ron, I have been hoping to get a similar shot like this for the last 3 years now with no luck. Antelope stags always run away from me!!! So terrific job even getting this coming into the frame. I really like the titled hill he is running up. Nice work!
