Spruce Grouse

I took a trip to the "Northeast Kingdom" of Vermont where in the northern most reaches near the Canadian Border you will find more moose then people, and an occasional Spruce Grouse. I made the choice to leave the tripod and flash in the car because of the dense forest, and the thought that I'd get 'bogged' down- pardon the pun.

I shot this hand held kneeling with the rig braced on one knee. Low SS were the result with all the images- this one was the best of the lot.

Thanks for looking.

This looks good to me Chuck, particularly HH at 1/100. I like the natural setting and I'm fine with all the twigs as the bird is well seen. Colors look natural. Well done. 500 f/4? New toy?

Terrific! What a great setting for this guy. I really like the alert pose. No problem with the twigs for me either, as they even kind of frame the bird in the habitat. Nice job.

Excellent results under the conditions. I've walked on one of these bogs in the Adirondacks looking for this species so I understand your concerns.

Excellent shot Chuck for handheld and 1/100 sec. I like the low angle that really shows the habitat of the grouse. Good feather detail on the larger version, nice job in getting this difficult shot, well done.

Very nice capture of an elusive species, even in Alaska. I really like the low angle and the bird's pose.
