Ghosts of Gleason Beach

I don't know, I thought with the sinister look of these sea stacks and the streaky light clouds, they looked kind of like ghosts. maybe I'm reaching a bit?

I've had this since new year's day 2009, and processed it many times. I figure my in field technique wasn't really good enough to deal with the range of light here. But, I like the scene, and have tried 1/2 dozen times to get it to an acceptable level. While there are still a few technical issues, mainly the hot spots, and secondly a slight darkness to the top of the main sea stack, I think I'm about where I'm able to get with it. There is actually some small grass/ground cover on top of the sea stack that gives it a fuzzy appearance in some spots along it's edges. Maybe a slight magenta cast due to the grad/overcast sky, but not much. So, I'd love to hear your thoughts. large version , as usual.

D200,
18-70mm,@18mm,
3 stop reverse grad,
6sec, f/11, iso 200,

Thanks,
Chris

I do like the sinister look here Chris as well as the motion in the clouds and subtle color. I think this would work as well in B&W too. I do think you are nit picking with the fuzziness and magenta cast comment. Looks fine to me. I think we all tend to nit pick our own work to death (no pun intended) but ask a non- photographer what they think.

Really, really nice! Just the right amount of detail in the shadows, and great color. Love the texture and reflected color in the sand.

Love how you have retained detail in the foreground rocks but still kept that ominous look to the rocks. Great sky as well. Excellent image in my book.

Oh yeah, you got it right this time. I think the title is appropriate, too. Looks to me like the stacks are leaning into the waves, fighting the tide. I think hot spots are just fine in the right setting, and this is one of those settings.

Nice scene, cloud streaks work well with the forms of the rocks. Light reflection is a nice accent, well noticed. For me personally the right lower side is too devoid of details, would like to see more of sand separating the rock from the edge. All in all, very well done.

Love the dark mood and processing, Chris. The color looks excellent to me. The only thing I would do is darken back the middle distant stack to match the others along that plane. Having it lighter tends to draw my eye out there and away from the main stack on the left. Awesome shot!

Chris - I like the way you carefully placed the rocks within the frame. I can see the fuzz on the larger view. The processing looks very good to me, especially where you had to probably dodge some of the stacks to reveal the detail at low light levels. The edges between sky and stack are often a giveaway of post processing, but everythings blends very well for me. The magenta cast is not a problem for me. Not sure how to improve on this one. :toast:

I like your organizing of the stacks in your comp. The movement in the clouds and waves are both very nice compliments to the scene. Well done.

Very moody, but excellent light with the textures so well defined everywhere. The technicals are excellent here. Can't even tell there was a grad.

I think you should be quite happy with your effort here. It looks great! The composition works well for me too even though the RHS rock formation borders on being a bit too intrusive. It doesn't really strike me as an issue or problem though. Overall, a very fine shot.
