Three endangered Australaian Painted Snipe are visiting our local swamp, finally after three days trying I managed to get a few shots of a female, who is brighter than the male and does all the displaying.

Canon 7D, EF500, skimmer, ISO 400, f/6.3, 1/250, slight crop from right and bottom.

An awesome bird Simon. Hate to hear of another endangered species. The larger image is super with nice sharpness and detail on the bird. Love the habitat you included in the shot.

Very cool, Simon. Excellent detail. Interesting little green patches in the plumage. I don't recall ever seeing that shade in a bird before.

Simon,
I love the look that she's giving you. One of complete indifference. Very sharp feather detail particularly in the larger post. Whites are perfectly exposed and great eye contact. Very pretty bird Simon. Well done. Congrats on getting this.

It is quite rare to see the African version as well, I just spent 10 days on the shores of Lake Kariba, failing to get near enough to get anything decent. The bird looks very similar, perhaps slightly less colourful.
Fabulous image
