Red-tailed Dragonfly

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted October 6, 2011129 views5 comments

A red-tailed dragonfly of some sort, but of the exact variety I'm having trouble pin-pointing (help!). Possibly a Red-tailed Pennant, Male? Anyway, he was very accommodating and patient with me, let me get very close and try several angles. Is perched on a metal pole in a friend's large country garden.

Canon EOS 60D
Lens: EF 124-105mm f4 L USM
f8
Shutter 1/160
ISO200
Kenko 1.4X Teleplus Pro 300 DGX
Nissin Speedlight and the Sun
Cropped significantly to get up close, but I don't know exactly how much

Comments and constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

Great DG protrait, Mark! I can't help with the ID. It is always nice to have a cooperative DG. The only thing I would have wished for was that it would have used another (natural) perch. But you can't have it all!

For id, could you provide some more info? Pond, lake, stream? Near the water source or a good flight away? Where was it shot (nearby city/state)? TIme of the year? Also, do you have a full body shot, even if it is not all that great?

I'm loving these close-up details, Mark! And the view through the wing is really cool!
