Not Exactly a Sunbird!

Canon EOS 7D, EF 500mm f/4L IS USM, Aperture Priority @ f/8 (1/1250 sec), -0 EV, ISO 640, Tripod, JPEG from RAW, Copped about 40% from Full Frame

This here's a Purple-Crested Turaco that flew into the same tree I was trying to capture shots of Sunbirds in. The location is Skukuza, the main camp of Kruger National Park, South Africa.

It was fairly high up and moving around quite rapidly with parts of it's head, body, or tail seemingly always obscured by twigs, flowers, or leaves. I must have spent a good 10 minutes moving around the tree trying to get into a better position in the hope of a clean shot before I finally managed to catch this one and right after that it took off.

Not that happy about those shadows running through it, but I'm more than pleased for having captured at least one shot with most of the head in the clear as well as the clarity in the eye, which comes up much better in the larger version, and all the more for the fact that this was the only opportunity I was to have with this marvellously colourful bird.

Critique and comments always welcome.

Indeed an extremely interesting and 'weird' species. Can fully understand that you are happy to have it captured. Circumstance probably were not ideal: light & shadow, rather messy BG - but all in all a pleasant shot ! Congrats, Grtz, Hans

A very cool looking bird Ashley. I agree that some aspects of this image are not ideal, but the eye is sharp and unobstructed,so this works OK for me.

Beautiful colors with the nice iridescence well represented. Shadows and background cannot be avoided. I think that the larger image is a touch over sharpened, though and I would bring that back a bit.

The color and the focus on the eye all work very well. Some might consider the image a little busy, but that is the environment you find the bird. I like the image as is.

Considering the difficulty you had with this bird an overall splendid image. An unusual specie for me too. I agree with Angela that this looks sharpened slightly beyond the ideal. Love those colors and the shadows are life. Hats off for this one.

Ashley, a very interesting subject and great look at the face but I agree that the shadows and some elements in the setting aren't ideal.

Great catch Ashley, the shadows don't bother me. Love the expression and the colors. Also like the red flowers picking up the red ring around the birds eye. Nice work,

Ray

A super bird you captured nicely here Ashley, great eye contact. Some fill flash might have helped to soften the shadows here. :toast:
