Canon EOS REBEL T2i
EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
10/9/2011 – 1:59:05 PM on a very rainy day during a very momentary break in the rain
1/250 sec
Aperture priority
f/5.6
ISO 400
Focal length 65 mm
Handheld - after a few shots I tried getting my tripod out of the car, but it started raining (hard) again
Okefenokee NWR, Georgia
Raw, LR3, CS5

What struck me about this scene was the bright flowers against the dark trees, and it struck me in a 50/50 way. I think I remember that 50/50 images may be supposed to be avoided. This doesn't look right to me with either half changed to a third. What do you think?

Comments and suggestions are desired and appreciated.

Thank you!

The yellow flowers flow like a stream from the lower right hand to the mid left side of the image. Very beautiful design, beautiful image.

I like this alot, Barbara. Contrast is a big part of it's appeal. Love the flowers and those green grasses exagerated by the dark trees is really nice.

I like the flow of the flowers through the frame Barbara as well as the contrasting trunks in the background. Lovely image.

I wouldn't sweat the 50/50 thing. The rule of thirds is generally pretty darn effective, but there are times when you can do just fine by ignoring it. I personally didn't think about it at all when I first looked at this shot, which I like quite a bit. The wildflowers justaposed against the (I assume) burned trunks tells the story of this environment very well. Even the falloff of sharpness among the distant trees due to the aperture is not a problem in my opinion.

I think the 50/50 works in this image. The flowers, the tall grasses, the wet trunks all ad layers of interest. Very nice image

You've picked a hard subject - obtaining a cohesive, attractive composition of a woods scene is darn difficult and, personally, I think the 50/50 comp really does hurt this scene. It puts it into more of a "snapshot" category IMO. The blank FG area in the lower left really pulls my eye towards it. You've chosen great elements with the yellow flowers and dark, wet bark, but I would suggest experimenting with different compositions, trying to find one that really expresses the emotion that you feel.
