505-A River Runs Thru It

Tsaina River Gorge, about 37 miles NE of Valdez, Alaska. A rain storm had just passed over and the emerging sun was very bright which makes for great colors and details in the rocks but also makes it impossible to capture with just one exposure. Fortunately, there was no wind so I was able to set up the tripod on the cliff edge and shoot 5 exposures for a blend (just a blend, not a tone mapped HDR).

There is a very narrow band of time where the gray glacial silt that makes the river muddy in the summer is still present but in very light concentrations which results in a very blue color, especially when the sky is blue. A few days before, the water is gray, a few days later it is clear.

The color of the water is stunning, and contrasts so well with the golden hues of the autumn foliage.Wonderful detail and clarity through this image.

Gorgeous shot (pun intended). The turquoise water contrasts nicely with the yellows and greens of the vegetation.

Gary, what a wonderful scene from FG to BG, just great! Not to sure about your blend here if this is too look natural though. The mid tones are too blocked. :toast:

Love those leading lines! And what a beautiful sky! The image feels a bit flat overall - in particular, the midtone areas. I love the colors in the water! Gorgeous!

Gary, the turquoise water is a nice contrast against the colored hills and turning tundra of the back mountain. The river really leads one through to the back of the image. The darker shaded triangle of water along the bottom edge grabs my eye (possible crop?), and the image still has an HDR appearance to me.

I do some HDR, too.
Usually I really have to crank back from overdoing it.
For my taste and my monitor at work I would like a toned down version.
Composition is excellent. Leading line is good, too. Great DOF.
