Yellow Crowned NH

Immature Yellow Crowned Night Heron on a fallen tree along the marshes in CT. The storm Irene downed many trees and on this day there were more varieties of herons and egrets in one spot than I've ever seen. Most were blocked by branches but this young bird was on his branch until an egret came along and chased him away. Taken with Canon 7D using 100-400 IS lens.

Comments welcomed.

a little flat (could use warmth and possibly some contrast) but a good look at this bird

Interesting and effective composition. There's little color saturation here - is this how the bird actually looked?

Luke and Richard. This is how it came out of the camera and is how I remember it. Cropped a very small amount from the left for composition, added some warmth to the background and sharpened just the bird. There were many more immature black crowned herons which were brownish in color but this one was grey.

Nice details but it almost looks like the bird is in black and white. Very interesting. If this was how it looked to you then this is how I would keep it.

I like the comp you have here. Nice light in the eye. I do think that a touch more contrast is needed. We have tons of these and I've never seen one this pale.
