Reaching for The Stars

2 hours of star trails exposed on Provia 100F film with Mamiya RB67 medium format camera. Foreground is moonlit by a 70% illuminated moon. Drum scanned. As close the the slide as possible, no additional post processing.

I'm planning to make a silhouette shot of that tree during the Winter, if the conditions permit it. Actually this was the original idea but I could not resist the temptation to try a moonlit version too.

Thanks for looking!

There is just something appealing about star trails done with film that digital seems to have a hard time replicating. Very nice.

As you probably know, I am not a big fan of star trails but many of the other elements work for me. I love the light on the foreground earth mound and tree and the color in the sky is beautiful.

The light is very nice on the foreground and the trails are nice and long but not so over powering. I like the image.

Boris, You did not mention what aperture you made this at. With a 70% moon I would expect the aperture closed quite a bit for a 2 hour exposure.

Thanks guys! Youssef, aperture was f/5.6. Never underestimate film reciprocity failure, especially when shooting very long exposures. 2 hours were a little bit too much here but I needed longer trails.

This is a very interesting and effective shot, at least for my tastes. The magenta cast on the cliff bugs me a bit and I do find the land a bit bright. Still quite a nice shot. I look forward to seeing you efforts during the winter.
