This is a bird that I have tried for years to get something reasonable, with relatively little luck.

This one posed in the open albeit in shade with a not to good BG outside our tent at Kalahari Tented Camp, Kgalagadi Trandsfrontier Park South Africa

EOS 1D MkIV

500mm F4 IS hand-held

F5.6, ISO 800, 1/200, EV +0.33

Thanks everybody, I waited a long time for this, and am very pleased with it.

In accordance with Murphy's we got another open sighting later in the year in Hwange, but we were in transit so getting my large lens in position in a crowded jeep was not easy, I'll try to post it soon

Nice shot of a very colorful bird. Great sharpness for a hand held long lens! Glad you finally got your photo of it. TFS.

Wow, what a cool looking bird! Very striking, the red, black and white. The framing is just a little tight for my tastes, but really nice detail in the black feathers. The crimson breast doesn't show the same level of detail though. Congrats on this wonderful capture. :toast:
