Tachinid Fly?

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted November 8, 20041,646 views16 comments
Canon 10D, Sigma 180+1.4x+20mm tube, Gitzo/A-S B1
ISO 100, 1/200s, f/16, 550EX+diffuser +0
Slight crop

Closest ID I could come up with from this shot (the only one I was able to get). Found him in my backyard just after sunset a week ago.

Suggestions are always welcome, and thanks for viewing!

Nice shot Jay and very sharp. Any reason for the 1.4x? Just wanting some more distance?

Extra distance is nice sometimes, but I like the higher magnification also. Enough tubes to get the same image magnification as the 1.4x + 20mm tube totally blows distant focus. I don't like to swap stuff around all the time or carry a bunch of crap around so that's what I usually walk out the door with, along with front and back caps if I decide to remove either the TC and/or tube.

great detail here Jay.

I like how you can see his little yellow stabilizer wings. I'm amazed at the detail and colors.

Whats it on?

Hi David. It's perched on green foxtail. The inflorescence and stalk are normally erect but my cat likes to roll around in this stuff.

Hi Jay!

What a good perch for a fly! It is in harmony with hairyness of the fly. I dont think it is a Tachinid fly. They usually have more "thorned" abdomen.

Thats a nice shot!

I use a Canon 60D with Sigma 105mm 1:2.8. To get better magnification can I use a Canon TC1.4x ? will it give me better results?
