EDIT: the compression is hurting this quite a bit so please view LARGE.

I spent 3 days in the GSMNP this past week. The colors this year were amazing and I was lucky enough to have one full day of rain. This image was taken on the day of rain (hence the dark trunks) on my back home on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I'm interested in others opinions on the placement of the left tree trunk. Normally I would include or exclude the whole trunk, but it seemed to work better this way. Whadya think?

I don't have the specs with me at the moment, but the gear I used was a 50D, 17-40 f4L, CPL.

C&C are welcome and put to use.

Thanks! :wavey:

Hi Joe. I also just returned yesterday from GSMNP. Beautiful colors. Live the dark trunks and green lichens. Not sure about the trunk on the left, although I love the one on the right.

Hi Joseph, This is a beautiful image with great color and texture. If it were mine I think I would crop the right side of the image to the right edge of the tree trunk so that both sides kind of match and somewhat frame the image just to see how it looks. The tree trunks definately add to the image

Great fall panorama Joe, I love the way the green lichen on the trunks contrasts with the bright foliage! I think Michael's "bookend" crop suggestion is a good one.

Lovely colors! I would have to either crop out the left trunk or if possible give it a little space, like the trunk on the right.

Stunning color Joseph. I second Michael's suggestion on the crop on the right.

I like your composition, Joseph. The panoramic format also works well here. I think the placement of the left tree trunk works well. The color here is fantastic and the contrasting reds and golds make this one sing.

Beautiful fall scene Joseph. Your panoramic format works great with this too. The large version is especially nice to view!!

I've never photographed fall color in the GSMNP. I'll certainly look into after
seeing this image. Concerning your question/comment regarding the tree
to the left. It's OK the way it is, but unless exposing some of the area to
the left of the tree would have been distracting, I would like to see what
the image would like with that kind of side framing. Nevertheless, this is
a beauty.

A fine balanced composition for me, Joseph. Although I was not sure about the trunk at the left in the smaller version, it leads me nicely into the image in the larger one and makes for a tangible foreground which I really like. Must be stunning as a large print.

I think the left tree trunk makes a nice frame for the shot, if anything I would crop the right side to the other tree trunk.

I dig it...I like the frame on the left side and actually might crop in the right side to make it the same and just have the two trunks frame the color. Feel like you could get some more pop with a bit more post (midtone contrast?). Nice catch!

I was going to suggest cropping to the right trunk on the right too. I like how this is abstract and real at the same time.

Love this array of autumn color and the wonderful lines of the trees. Truly a superb image. I'm going to depart from the other crop suggestions though and suggest cropping out the left hand tree completely, leaving only an exquisite pano of autumn color and graphic tree lines with the single prominent tree on the right hand side. To me the tree on the left detracts from the gorgeous autumn tapestry you have here. Either way, a fantastic image.

I am of the should have some space to the left catagory of viewers. Now I think you would have to crop it out as book ends will darken the whole image and compete with your colour...(which is your focus)...Just go back and re-shoot it...you could take another week off work....

Wonderful panorama, the tree on the left doesn't bother me, but a crop from the right as others mentioned may work even better. :toast:

Nice scene  as for cropping, it is personal choice. You could make the trees "bookends" by cropping the forest just right of the "right" tree. Or if you have some forest scene next to the "left" tree that would work also. Either way this looks really nice, and would look cool printed huge!!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I like the idea of bookends. I'll make the adjustment before I post on my website.
